The School of Psychology (SoP) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) organised an enlightening guest lecture titled “Mind and Brain: Is there a Difference?” on 19th March 2025.
Professor Carmel Mevorach, Associate Professor and Head of Global Engagement (Psychology) at the University of Birmingham, served as the distinguished guest lecturer for the engaging and informative session.
The guest lecture aimed to deepen APU students’ understanding of the connection between the mind and the brain through neuroscience, while promoting awareness of cognitive diversity and inclusive education.
Team responsible for overseeing the guest lecture:
- Ms Raihan Munira Moh Sani (Lecturer, SoP at APU)
- Representatives from Student Services and Marketing at APU
Exploring the Mind-Brain Connection
In the first segment, students were taken on a deep dive into the intricate relationship between brain function and mental processes.
Prof Mevorach skillfully guided the discussion using compelling clinical case studies and pioneering research in brain stimulation, shedding light on how different areas of the brain contribute to various cognitive functions.
Additionally, students gained a clearer understanding of how brain injuries can significantly affect consciousness, perception, and behavior, prompting thoughtful reflection on the delicate balance between neural activity and mental experience.
Technology, Neuroscience, and Inclusivity
In the second segment, a notable focus was placed on the evolving intersection between neuroscience and technology.
Prof Mevorach highlighted how cognitive science is increasingly turning its attention to how individuals interact with digital tools, emphasising that understanding these interactions is crucial in designing more effective and inclusive learning environments.
This is especially important for supporting neurodiverse individuals, whose cognitive experiences may differ from traditional learning models.
By showcasing real-world examples and current research, the guest lecture underscored how technological advancements can be harnessed not only to enhance educational outcomes but also to foster a more inclusive and empathetic academic landscape.
Reflections on the Guest Lecture

Mr Muhammad Nabil Danial Mohd Zaini (Executive, University Placement, of Student Services and Marketing at APU) reflected on the guest lecture’s success, highlighting its structured delivery and profound impact on students.
“The guest lecture not only enhanced academic understanding, but also sparked curiosity about the broader implications of neuroscience in supporting inclusive education and mental health awareness.”
In contrast, Ms Raihan emphasised the importance of such collaborations in bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world application.
On top of that, she expressed appreciation for Prof Mevorach’s engaging approach and acknowledged the guest lecture’s role in exposing students to cutting-edge research and global perspectives in cognitive neuroscience.
“This kind of academic exposure plays a vital role in shaping future psychologists, equipping them not just with theoretical frameworks, but with a deep appreciation for the real-world impact of neuroscience in addressing contemporary psychological and educational challenges.”
