In a university setting, education extends far beyond lecture halls and laboratories. For budding minds, meaningful participation in community service—particularly initiatives that cultivate empathy, compassion and social responsibility—plays a vital role in shaping character.

Such experiences not only enhance soft skills through the coordination of campaigns and outreach efforts, but also nurture graduates who are socially conscious, reflective and ready to contribute positively to society.

Entering 2026 with renewed purpose, the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) Community Engagement Club, better known as ACE Club, organised its first two pet care volunteering sessions of the year at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), one of the University’s long-standing community partners.

Held on 24 January and 28 February, the first session saw an encouraging turnout of approximately 30 volunteers. Among them were around 20 first-time participants, joined by 10 returning volunteers, including several APU alumni who continue to dedicate their time to this cause. The second session recorded an even stronger response, with 35 student volunteers taking part.

The initiative brought together students, alumni and staff united by a shared commitment to giving back, while deepening their understanding of animal welfare and responsible pet care. The presence of alumni was particularly heartening, reflecting the enduring sense of civic responsibility cultivated during their years at APU.

For Clement Pang Zhen Yu, an APU alumnus holding a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Computing and a volunteer for the past decade, the programme remains a meaningful part of his life. “This routine continues to play an important role in my life even after university,” he shared.

“Volunteering here reminds me that contributing to the community does not end with graduation. It is a lifelong responsibility, and being able to make a tangible difference—even in small ways—keeps me grounded and grateful,” continued Clement.

Similarly, Darshan Harikrishnan, an APU alumnus who graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science (Digital Forensics), began volunteering in 2019 and emphasised the long-term impact of sustained engagement. “Each session offers a different experience,” he noted. “It is fulfilling to witness the cumulative impact of consistent effort over time. You begin to see familiar faces—both human and animal—and that continuity makes the experience even more meaningful.”

The pet care programme offers participants valuable insight into the daily operations of an animal shelter and the dedication required to ensure the well-being of rescued animals. Through hands-on involvement, volunteers gain a deeper appreciation of the challenges faced by shelters, from resource constraints to the emotional demands of caring for abandoned and injured animals.

During the session, volunteers assisted with essential housekeeping tasks to maintain a clean and comfortable environment. They walked the dogs, fed the cats, refreshed water stations and ensured that each animal received attention and care throughout the day. While these tasks may appear simple, they are fundamental to the shelter’s operations and significantly enhance the animals’ quality of life.

Beyond physical assistance, the initiative also delivered tangible support in the form of RM2,500 worth of essential supplies. Donations included dog and cat food, treats, cleaning products and medical necessities such as flea treatments and deworming medication, carefully selected based on the shelter’s immediate needs. These contributions helped ease the operational burden of the shelter and ensured the continued care of the animals under its protection.

Commenting on the initiative under her patronage, Ms Abbhirami Sivarajan, Lecturer from the School of Business (SoB), highlighted the broader impact of such efforts. “This pet care initiative reflects the spirit of compassion and community involvement within the APU community,” she remarked.

“As the year progresses, these activities provide meaningful platforms for students and alumni to contribute positively to society. More importantly, they cultivate empathy, responsibility and a deeper appreciation of how collective action can create lasting impact,” she added.

Programmes such as this encourage students to step beyond academic pursuits and engage with real-world social issues. In doing so, they develop not only practical skills but also the moral compass required to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Through sustained community engagement, APU continues to empower its students and alumni to lead with both competence and compassion—proving that true education is measured not only by knowledge gained, but by lives uplifted.
