APU 1 (Psychology Career Masterclass)

Recently, the School of Psychology (SoP) at Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), in collaboration with the Psychology Graduate Association organised a Psychology Career Masterclass for final-year Psychology students.

The masterclass was coordinated by Ms Subashini Ganesan (Lecturer, SoP at APU) and Ms Amirah Husna Mohamad Hata Abdullah (Lecturer cum Psychology Lab Technician, SoP at APU), aimed to provide students with deeper insight into industry expectations, essential workplace competencies, and realistic career pathways within the field of psychology.

APU 2 (Psychology Career Masterclass)

Moderated by Mr William Hoi Wei Yuan, a Talent Strategist, the masterclass featured three invited panelists; together, they offered diverse professional perspectives across key psychology specialisations:

  1. Mr Brian Kueh Shi Hua, Clinical Psychologist
  2. Ms Wong Chye Har, Industrial and Organisational Psychologist
  3. Ms Sum Xin Ying, Educational Psychologist

Exploring Career Directions in Psychology

The session began with an interactive introduction and ice-breaking activity, where students reflected on their own career interests by indicating whether they were inclined towards Clinical Psychology, Industrial and Organisational Psychology, or Educational Psychology.

The session then explored three major psychology career pathways in greater depth:

  1. Clinical Psychology: Students obtained deeper insight into industry requirements, training pathways, and practical experiences within clinical settings, including supervised practice and professional accreditation expectations.
  2. Industrial and Organisational Psychology: Students gained insight into roles in Human Resources, Organisational Development, and Talent Management, as well as the competencies required to thrive in corporate and consultancy environments.
  3. Educational Psychology: Students learned about school-based roles, intervention practices, behaviour management strategies, and working with special needs students in inclusive learning environments.

Preparing for Professional Practice

Beyond career exploration, the session also focused on professional readiness; to which a dedicated segment guided students on preparing for the transition from university to the workplace.

Students received detailed advice on crafting resumes and CVs tailored specifically to psychology-related roles.

Emphasis was placed on presenting academic achievements, practicum experiences, research involvement, and transferable skills in a way that aligns with employer expectations.

In addition, practical guidance was provided on interview preparation, including how to communicate skills confidently, respond effectively to situational questions, and present oneself professionally during recruitment processes.

Industry Panel Sharing and Student Engagement

APU 3 (Psychology Career Masterclass)

The session then transitioned into an industry panel sharing and Q&A segment, where students had the opportunity to engage directly with the invited panelists.

Students raised thoughtful questions about career progression, study pathways, workplace challenges, and strategies for professional growth.

Key takeaways from this session:

  1. Mr Brian emphasised that building competence in clinical psychology requires structured training, consistent supervision, and extensive hands-on clinical exposure to develop both technical expertise and ethical practice.
  2. Ms Wong highlighted the importance of adaptability and strong interpersonal skills when applying psychological principles within consultancy, organisational development, and corporate environments.
  3. Ms Sum underscored the value of inclusive practices in educational settings, stressing the need for tailored interventions, experiential learning approaches, and continuous collaboration when supporting individuals, particularly within the special needs community.

Their insightful reflections and practical advice provided students with a realistic understanding of industry expectations and workplace realities across different psychology domains.
